Washington Heritage Trail

THE WASHINGTON HERITAGE TRAIL meanders through the three counties of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle offering a rich timeline of American history that includes a colonial spa town, early industrial sites, railroad landmarks and Civil War locations. The footsteps of America’s first president are particularly prominent and inspired creation of the 136-mile National Scenic Byway. Much of the trail follows two historic east/west passageways into America’s first frontier: the Potomac River and the historic Alexandria to Warm Springs Road which is today’s WV9 crossing the Panhandle.

There are several ways to enjoy the trail for a day, weekend or week. It can be entered on the east at Harpers Ferry, or on its western end at Paw Paw. Travelers along the famed Shenandoah Valley marked by Interstate 81 can start in the geographic middle at Martinsburg and head either east or west. The Potomac River defines the full length of the northern boundary. The wild and scenic Cacapon River snakes through its western segment, bisecting Morgan County. The historic Shenandoah River traverses the eastern corner and marks the entire area as the northern sector of the Shenandoah Valley. Throughout the region, there are numerous fast-moving streams and many springs including those healing warm waters known for centuries as Berkeley Springs and revered as the most ancient watering place in the valley.
