    The downtown business district promotions group known as Charles Town Now will hold its Halloween festival from 5 to 7pm. "Local businesses will have tables out to give trick or treaters treats and games will be available," said Daphne Wahl, Charles Town Now's president. Washington Street from George to West streets will be closed to keep youngsters safe.

  5. Haunted Symphony

    The Charles Washington Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Camilo Pérez-Mejía, presents "Haunted Symphony: Masquerade" at 7:30pm in the Charles Washington Hall in Charles Town. The concert kicking off the orchestra's sixth season will include music by Strauss, Grieg and Sarasate featuring violinist Eli Thomas and an appearance by the Charles Washington youth Orchestra. Admission is free with a suggested $10 donation for adults. Costumes for audience members are not required, but highly encouraged.

    The Permaculture Center at Claymont is hosting a food forest tree planting where volunteers will plant 400 edible trees and shrubs, learn about edible food forests and study stream bank ecology along the North Fork of the Bullskin. Come for all or part of this free tree planting event beginning at 9am on the Claymont property near the Great Barn at 667 Huyett Road in Charles Town. Following the tree planting, volunteers are invited to a chamber music concert on site sponsored by groupmuse.com. The concert tickets are $10.   8. Shepherdstown's Apple Butter Fest

    The Shepherdstown Fire Department's 28th Annual Apple Butter Festival begins with a breakfast buffet from 6 to 11 am and will include sales of the fresh-from-the-kettle, from-scratch apple butter for $8 per quart, plus the chance to buy homemade baked goods and other food items. There will also be an arts and crafts sale. The station is located on W.Va. 45 just outside of downtown. Volunteers are needed to help with apple butter work on Friday and on Saturday starting at 5am. No orders for apple butter will be accepted until Saturday.

    Washington High's Key Club hosts its second-annual Fall Festival with storytime, face painting, corn hole and much more from 1 to 4pm at Wright Denny Intermediate School at 209 W. Congress St. in Charles Town. The cost is $5 per child (with siblings just $3 each), with all proceeds going to Jefferson County Community Ministries. Youngsters are encouraged to come in costume and bring a pre-carved pumpkin to enter in the Jack O'Lantern contest.
